- UTC is used to calculate the times for the beginning and the end of the month.
Activities that generate bandwidth usage
Some of the activities that generate bandwidth usage in Box are straightforward, and some are not as obvious. The difference between Internal and External usage is an example. Internal/External usage is defined based on who owns the files, not based on the user who is doing the activity. This section lists examples of Box activities and what bandwidth usage is logged for those activities.- Managed user views a file owned by someone in your organization in a browser: Internal Download usage
- Someone not in your organization views a file owned by someone in your organization in a browser (for example, from an shared link or as an external collaborator): Internal Download usage
- Managed user downloads a file owned by someone in your organization in a browser: Internal Download usage
- Managed user uploads a file into your organization in a browser: Internal Upload usage
- Open a file in a desktop app from a browser: Internal Download usage
- Open a file in a desktop app from Box Drive: Internal Download usage if the file is not on the local hard drive
- Save a file in a desktop app: Internal Upload usage
- File autosave: Internal Upload usage, and the full size of the file because Box stores full-size versions of updated files, not diffs
- Edit a Box Note: Internal Upload usage (work in a Box Note is performed locally as a browser app, and changes are uploaded to Box)
- Edit a Box Canvas: Internal Upload Bandwidth usage (work in a Box Canvas is performed locally as a browser app, and changes are uploaded to Box)
- Sending a file stored in Box for e-signature to someone outside your organization: Internal Upload Bandwidth and Content Moved Out usage
- Managed user uploads a file into a folder owned by different organization (Collaborated with your organization): External Upload usage
- Managed user downloads a file from a folder owned by different organization: External Download usage

Bandwidth Usage by User report filters
This section describes the filters that you can configure to run Bandwidth Usage by User reports.User Type
Optional. The type of user to include in the report. Select from:
- Managed - to include only managed users
- External - to include only external users
- All - to include both managed and external users
Users or Groups
Not available when External is selected in User Type. Enter one or more names of managed users or of user groups to limit the User Bandwidth Usage report to bandwidth of those users. Note: Box displays the first ten matches in alphabetical order rather than by exact match.
Date Range
Allows you to limit the report to only bandwidth activity within the defined time period. Select from:
- This Month (default, includes all data from the current month up to the data freshness date)
- Last Month
- Custom Range (and then select a start and/or end date), where the start date can be up to a year prior to the current date
NoteBecause the Bandwidth Usage by User report shows monthly totals per user, selecting a date within a month will select the entire month for inclusion in the report. For example, if you select February 20 as a start date and June 3 as an end date, the report will contain data from the entire month of February and the entire month of June (as well as March, April, and May, of course).
