Confidence levels and references help you evaluate metadata values extracted by Box Extract. Confidence levels indicate how confident Box Extract is in each extracted metadata value, helping you identify values that might require additional review. References help you verify an extracted value by displaying where the information was found in the source document. Select an extracted metadata field to view its reference in Box Preview. References are supported for PDF, PNG, JPG, and TIFF files.

This feature is available only for the Enterprise Advanced plan.
If you don’t see the confidence level or references when viewing metadata in Box Preview, your enterprise admin might not have enabled the feature in the Admin Console, the features were not enabled when building and configuring the Custom Extract Agent, or Box Extract might not have returned a confidence level for the extracted value.

Using confidence level in Box Preview

To view confidence levels and references for extracted metadata:
  1. Open a file in Box Preview.
  2. Select the Metadata icon.
  3. If no metadata exists, select the plus + icon next to Metadata, select the metadata template you want to use, choose which Box Extract Agent to use, and then select Autofill. Box Extract extracts metadata to the metadata fields included in the metadata template.
If confidence levels are enabled, a confidence level displays next to each extracted value if Box Extract identifies it as having low or high confidence. Confidence levels are categorized as:
  • LOW: < 0.7
  • HIGH: ≥ 0.9
See the include_confidence_score parameter for how Box Extract calculates these scores. If one or more extracted values have a LOW confidence level, a banner displays the number of fields that might require review. Select View to review those fields. If references are enabled, select an extracted metadata field to view its reference and locate the supporting information in the source document. You can use this information to help verify the extracted value. When reviewing an extracted value, you can:
  • Accept the extracted value
  • Correct the value
  • Clear the value
Confidence levels and references generated using Autofill in Box Preview can be enabled independently by admins in the Box AI enablement settings in the Admin Console. Confidence levels and references apply to metadata extracted using Autofill in Box Preview and Box Apps, as well as files processed using Custom Extract Agents in Box Extract.
