# About Unmanaged Users

<div className="article_labels_list" style={{display: 'none'}} dangerouslySetInnerHTML={{__html: "Admin"}} />

Unmanaged users are Box users who:

* Have unlicensed and unpaid personal Box service accounts that are acquired independently of an Admin or Co-admin and that do not belong to your Box organization.
* Possess email addresses from your domain or [verified domains](/en/announcements/box-admin-tools/domain-verification) (domains owned or controlled by your organization).

As an Admin, you can:

* [View details of an unmanaged user](/en/box-admin-tools/managing-box-users-and-admins/unmanaged-users/view-details-of-an-unmanaged-user)
* [Manage folders that have been shared with a unmanaged user](/en/box-admin-tools/managing-box-users-and-admins/unmanaged-users/managing-folders-that-have-been-shared-with-an-unmanaged-user)
* [Convert unmanaged users to managed users](/en/box-admin-tools/managing-box-users-and-admins/unmanaged-users/converting-unmanaged-users-to-managed-users)
* [Delete an unmanaged user](/en/box-admin-tools/managing-box-users-and-admins/unmanaged-users/deleting-an-unmanaged-user)

Box encourages you to convert unmanaged users to managed users and [enable auto enrollment](/en/box-admin-tools/how-to-guides-for-admins/domain-management-verification-and-auto-enrollment#enabling-auto-enrollment-for-a-managed-domain) to gain visibility into their activity and avoid security and compliance risks.

## Identify unmanaged users

The ability to identify unmanaged users is restricted to admin roles with the [permission to manage users](/en/box-admin-tools/managing-box-users-and-admins/understanding-user-management/users-groups-settings#co-admin-permissions):

1. Navigate to the **Admin Console**.
2. Select **Users & Groups**.
3. Select the **External Users** tab.
4. Select **Unmanaged Users** from the first dropdown menu above the list of named external users.

These users can be converted to managed users by following the process listed in [Converting Unmanaged Users to Managed Users](/en/box-admin-tools/managing-box-users-and-admins/unmanaged-users/converting-unmanaged-users-to-managed-users).

Details of unmanaged users will display in the [external users tab](/en/box-admin-tools/managing-box-users-and-admins/understanding-user-management/users-groups-settings#external-users-tab), including their name, email address, and invite status (if an invite has been sent by the admin).

<Note>
  **Note:**

  Unmanaged users are not controlled or monitored by your Admin, Co-Admin, or your organization's security policies, meaning that they represent a potential security and compliance risk. Box advises you to convert them to managed users as soon as you can.
